Before you have your carpets deep cleaned, it’s natural to have questions about the process and what to expect.
Getting answers to these questions beforehand will help you feel more at ease with the whole process.
Below, we cover some of the most common carpet cleaning FAQs.
Questions about our professional carpet cleaning
The most common questions are about the carpet cleaning process. Here are some FAQs about the process we use at Chelsea Cleaning.
How long does the cleaning take?
This will depend on the size of the carpets and how many rooms the house has. Most houses can be done in less than a day, even when there are multiple carpeted rooms. To be safe, make sure the whole day is set aside for cleaning.
What detergents do you use during cleaning?
We use tried and tested stain removers that won’t damage the carpet fibres, a non-residue carpet cleaning formula and Traffic Lane, a pre-conditioning detergent for heavily soiled carpet.
What is the process you use to clean carpets?
Our carpet cleaning process has been refined over many years to give you the best results. It follows these steps:
- Carpets are vacuumed with a steam cleaning machine.
- Any marks and stains are spot-cleaned and Traffic Lane is used on high traffic areas.
- The carpets are industrially cleaned with a non-residue carpet cleaner.
- The carpets are then vacuumed again and left to air-dry.
Does carpet deep cleaning damage the carpet?
No. On the contrary, regular deep cleans can increase the lifespan of your carpets. Dirt and dust are abrasive and can lead to fibre damage and discolouration.
Does the cleaning process leave a smell?
There may be a subtle smell of detergent but nothing that airing out the house won’t get rid of. There will be no lingering chemicals or harsh smells after carpet cleaning.
How to prepare before carpet cleaners arrive
If you’re not sure what to expect on the day of your carpet cleaning, here are some tips for preparing before the cleaners arrive.
Should I move my furniture out the way?
Yes, you will need to move furniture and any breakable items out of the way. Our team can assist with heavier items if necessary.
Should I vacuum my carpets beforehand?
No, there is no need to vacuum your carpets before. The carpet cleaning process includes this step using an industrial steam cleaner.
What should I do with my pets?
It’s best if pets are put in a separate room or out in the garden during carpet cleaning. This will help reduce their anxiety and allow the cleaning process to happen uninterrupted.
Anything else I need to do beforehand?
If possible, it’s nice to leave an open parking space for the cleaning van or bakkie to park. This makes offloading equipment much easier and faster.
Best practice for after carpets are cleaned
Once the carpet cleaning is done, you may have some questions about how to treat your freshly cleaned carpets.
How long does it take for the carpet to dry?
This will depend on the humidity and the type of carpet but because most of the moisture is extracted during the process, it usually takes no more than a couple of hours for the carpet to dry.
How long until I can walk on the freshly cleaned carpet?
You won’t damage it if you walk on it immediately but it will still be damp and you might make marks. It’s best to let it dry first. Also, be sure the carpet is completely dry before moving furniture back to avoid dents in the carpet fibres.
How long should I wait until my next carpet clean?
No more than a year. Deep cleaning of carpets is recommended once a year and more frequently in high traffic areas and carpets that are frequently exposed to pets and children.

The process for rug cleaning differs from fitted carpets. Here are some common FAQs about loose rug cleaning.

- Rugs are thoroughly beaten using our Rug Master machine.

- Our state-of-the-art centrifuge dryer removes up to 95% of the water.
- The rugs are then air-dried before being packed and returned to your home.
What types of loose rug can you clean?
We can clean most loose carpets, even those made from sensitive fibres. These include oriental carpets, Persian rugs, flokatis, shaggys, woollen rugs, kelims and durries.
