Chelsea Cleaning offers expert cleaning of all kelims and durries.
Our processes are designed to help restore these rugs to their original glory, while ensuring that they don’t shrink, fade or suffer other damage during the cleaning process.
Cleaning kelims and durries
Chelsea Cleaning will determine the optimal way to clean your kelims and durries,

At Chelsea Cleaning, we begin by beating these rugs to remove loose dirt.

We treat any stains with an appropriate stain remover.

Depending on the condition of the rug, it will be either dry cleaned or hand cleaned.

The rug is then hung up to air dry before final inspection and packing.
About cleaning kelims
Kelims – also sometimes spelt as kilims – are flat, tapestry-woven carpets or prayer rugs. They originate in the Middle East and are made from wool, or a combination of wool and cotton. Traditional kelim designs are usually geometric. Diamonds, medallions and octagonal shapes are common.
Like other loose woollen rugs, kelims commonly absorb protein-based stains and are susceptible to shrinking. This makes it vital to treat them with the appropriate care during cleaning. With kelims, there’s also a danger of colours fading.
About cleaning durries
A durrie – also often spelt as dhurrie or durry – is a thick, flat-woven carpet that originates in India. Durries are hand-loomed and are often reversible. They may be made from cotton, wool, jute (vegetable fibres), silk or a combination.
Typical durrie designs differ from region to region within India, but traditional motifs include Islamic images, stripes and geometric patterns. Thanks to the influence of Victorian England on 19th century India, floral-patterned durries are also common.
